Iran Parliament approves mutual legal assistance treaty with Pakistan
TEHRAN – In a move aimed at enhancing legal cooperation and fostering stronger ties, the Iranian Parliament has approved a mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) focused on civil and commercial issues with Pakistan.
The legislation, consisting of an introduction and 16 articles, was approved during an open parliamentary session on Wednesday following a presentation of the Judicial and Legal Committee's report.
MLATs serve as formal agreements between countries, facilitating the exchange of information to support the enforcement of laws and aiding in criminal investigations. This includes assisting with the interrogation of suspects located in another country.
The approval of this MLAT is expected to streamline legal processes between Iran and Pakistan, creating a more stable and secure legal framework for individuals and businesses in both nations.
Iran and Pakistan have taken several steps in the past couple of years to enhance cooperation in various fields. The two countries have also inked recent economic and security pacts to strengthen their bilateral relationship.
